Mary Anspach Obituary

Mary Louise Anspach, also known as Mimi, passed away on July 19, 2025, at age 93, surrounded by her daughters and grandchildren. She was born on September 7, 1931 in Tacoma, Washington.

Mary was an abundance of kindness and caring, and she touched the lives of everyone she met. Known for her engaging conversations about San Pedro, Croatia, old Los Angeles, and the early Hollywood film industry. She was very proud of being a daughter of a fisherman, her job at Marine Hardware, and her career as a caregiver. She also cherished her family, and especially her grandchildren.

Mary is survived by her daughter Louise Timmer, daughter Marie Zabalza (Juan); her two beloved grandchildren: Christina Zabalza and Michael Zabalza; siblings Phyllis Svilicich and Joseph Matosin; nephews Paul Fiamengo and Michael Svilicich; and niece Lynn Svilicich; and many close cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Matosin and Angeline Matosin.

Mary grew up in San Pedro with her family and graduated from San Pedro High School. A devoted caregiver, she spent many years in hospitals, home health, and hospice with patients. Mimi was also a huge advocate for the welfare of animals by fostering, feeding, and rescuing animals in need. For her family, she was also a supportive mother, offering comfort to those in need and caring for her grandchildren with unbounded love. Some examples of her selflessness include caring for friends and others before their passing.

Mary’s humor and spirit were contagious. She enjoyed gardening, historic restaurants, and visiting Hollywood. She loved family gatherings, especially when all the cousins got together at her mother’s home.

She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, empathy, a strong work ethic, love, friendship, and laughter. To many, she nurtured and healed, making the world a brighter place, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
